Durrell Gorilla Enclosure

Durrell Wildlife’s ‘Ark in Action’ initiative is a strategic master plan of growth and redevelopment conceived with ray hole architects part of which requires the existing Gorilla enclosure to be improved to satisfy the breeding and exchange program.
Sensitive concealment of the new accommodation within a mature landscape, creating a public viewing gallery whilst minimising disruption of the Gorilla population during the works was paramount.
Changes of level and traversing bridges will create a safe and engaging environment for the animals and an immersive experience for the visitor. Guests can also gain access to the roof to enjoy spectacular elevated views across the external enclosures from underneath a new lightweight canopy.
